Thought Cottage Darling
Situated on the edge of Darling, Thought Cottage is set amongst the indigenous Renosterveld in the Langeveldt View complex. Perfect for two, comfortable for six and stretching to a gathering of eight, this green-roofed, white walled, self-catering cottage is a wonderful holiday getaway.
Self Catering Accommodation
Downstairs is the open plan kitchen (fully equipped in case the collection of fine restaurants in the village don’t appeal) with a lounge complete with fireplace for rainy winter nights and couches that you can spend the day wallowing in watching Ngunis graze contentedly in the neighbouring field.
Don’t forget to bring your favourite CDs; there are mini hi-fis in the lounge upstairs and downstairs - although the birdsong is often music aplenty. Please note, there is no television in the cottage, the Discovery Channel has nothing on the view from the stoep, but all the big sport games are screened at Café Mosaic in the village.
The cottage is furnished with everything from heirlooms to Ikea, things from travels through West Africa are dotted here and there and great finds from the antique shops in the village add to the non-conformist décor. It’s a bit of this, a little of that but I hope that you find it charming and welcoming.
An en-suite double room and twin bedroom lend themselves to blissful nights under pure cotton duvets, with electric blankets to warm beds on those chilly winter nights. The en-suite bathroom is tastefully tiled in travertine and the corner bath under the candle chandelier is more than adequate for two. (Bubble bath provided!). A second bathroom, with a shower and toilet is to be found adjacent to the twin bedroom.
A spiral staircase leads upwards to the loft room with a double bedroom area on one side and a lounge area on the other. The couch here doubles as a comfy sleeper couch and the bookcase crammed with easy weekend reading makes this a most delightful space in which to while away the hours.
Facilities
Step out onto the balcony with a glass of fine local wine at sunset and watch the sun slip behind the hills, stay out there a little bit longer and lose track of time counting the stars in the heavens above. Back downstairs, a verandah with built-in braai leads out to an indigenous garden which come springtime delights the senses with a riot of wild flowers.
The garden is a joint project between myself and Mother Nature. I am a selective weeder, anything that has a flower or might produce seeds for birds or simply please the eye is left to flourish. The little patch of lawn is only cut once a year after all the flowers have faded away. So, search amongst the “weeds”; little flowers, the jewels of the earth, abound at all times of the year, some only at certain times of the day. The patch of garden under the balcony is left to grow wild, butterflies abound and the diversity of plants in these few square metres is astounding.
So don’t delay, come spend a day, a week, a month indulging in the niceness that is country living. Unwind and absorb the vista that extends uninterrupted towards the horizon. Slow down, breathe deeply, let your thoughts wander.
