Rhodene Farm Cottages Prince Alfred Hamlet

Rhodene is a working fruit farm and offers luxury self-catering accommodation which overlooks the fertile Ceres valley and is situated at the foot of the majestic Skurweberg mountain range. The farm is 9km from Ceres and easily accessible as it is only 500m off a tarred road. There are breath-taking views from Rhodene of the entire valley and you are guaranteed to go home rejuvenated and relaxed.

The self-catering cottages were originally staff houses on the farm that have been renovated. We now have seven cottages as we have recently completed renovations on another four. All are fully furnished. Linen and towels are provided. Each cottage has under-floor heating for the cold Ceres winters and three of them have indoor fireplaces.

The Farm

The farm has been in the von Buddenbrock family since 1951 when Ray von Buddenbrock was given the farm by her father as a wedding present. Her son, Ean, is the present owner and has been on the farm since 1989. Ean is married to Glenda and they have a daughter, Chantelle, and a son, Karl and three other furry children. Skollie, is a Great Dane, that was rescued from the S.P.C.A. and follows Glenda around - he is huge and loves eating! Charlie Brown, a Jack Russell, is thoroughly spoiled and rules the roost. A new addition to the family is a Rottweiler named Rambo who is the naughtiest dog we have ever had!

The farm was originally laid out by Captain Dean in the 1920's and he named the farm after his daughter, Rhoda. Captain Dean was a founder member of Ceres Fruit Growers’ packhouse and fruit was exported from the farm under the "Heron Brand" in those days. He was also a keen golfer and a founder member of the Ceres Golf Club.

The size of Rhodene is 150 hectares of which some 30 hectares are planted to fruit. It is a deciduous fruit farm consisting mainly of various varieties of pears, as well as apples, peaches and plums. The farm practices Integrated Fruit Production (IFP) using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and biological controls where possible and is Global GAP accredited. The fruit picking season stretches from the middle of December to the beginning of April.

Enjoy a relaxing time surrounded by the exquisite natural beauty of the area.
