Koppie Alleen \ Accommodation in De Hoop

Nestled amongst the magnificent fynbos, home to countless birds and antelope, Koppie Alleen has the elusive combination of privacy and direct access to the sandy beaches. Built in the local fisherman-style, the cottage boasts four-poster beds with crisp white linen and mosquito netting.

The Mediterranean-style living area has a huge indoor fireplace for chilly Cape winters. The protected outdoor area looks onto the beach, with sun-loungers, umbrellas and barbecue area for alfresco dining and relaxation. Evenings spent at Koppie Alleen recall a time when the romance of firelight and paraffin lanterns was commonplace.

Activities

From whale watching and birding to game viewing and areas of anthropological interest, De Hoop Nature Reserve has something to offer all manner of nature lovers. Its 70km of rugged coastline and sheltered rock pools provide ideal swimming in addition to land based whale-viewing. And visitors can choose from a range of hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as guided interpretive fynbos and rock pool walk and birding excursions.

The Reserve

Few other reserves offer as complete an outdoor experience as De Hoop - sea, sand dunes, the vlei, a floral sensation of rare fynbos plants, diverse antelope and the Potberg Mountains. Birders observe wading birds on the shores of the vlei while the Potberg Mountains are home to a colony of endangered Cape vultures. Hikers and cyclists have close-up encounters with bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, eland, red hartebeest, baboons and ostrich.

Activities are diverse and guests choose between various day walks, the multi-day Whale Trail, mountain biking along the many gravel roads, horse riding or scenic game drives. Lazing on the beach and snorkeling in the many turquoise rock pools is simply another way to pass a rewarding day.

Flora

The reserve forms part of the world’s smallest and most threatened plant kingdoms and is home to rare species of lowland Cape Floral Kingdom fynbos. Of the estimated 1, 500 plant species, around 108 are rare or threatened, 34 occur only in De Hoop Nature Reserve and 14 were only recently discovered and remain to be documented.

Fauna

De Hoop’s many terrestrial habitats also support a diversity of animal groups including 86 mammal species, most notably the rare bontebok and Cape mountain zebra, as well as eland, grey rhebuck, baboon, yellow mongoose, caracal and the occasional leopard.
