Etienne and Vera welcomes you to Cypress Cottage, a historical retreat, one of Swellendam's oldest and proudest establishments. Experience the charm and secluded enchantment of this historic 18th century Cape Colonial homestead, build more than 200 years ago (1796).

Enjoy a magnificent country experience set in glorious gardens with century old Oak trees and a sparkling swimming pool, reflecting all the moods of country living. Wake up to the sound of birds in the comfort of your stylishly furnished en-suite bedroom. The highlight of your stay will be the hearty country breakfast that is served in the elegant dining room or Victorian veranda overlooking the beautiful garden. At Cypress Cottage, we proud ourselves on a special brand of hospitality and friendly service, which includes the sharing of valuable tourist information within the Western Cape region.

Accommodation

Accommodation consists of six elegantly furnished en-suite and very spacious bedrooms with their own private entrances. These stylish rooms all have colonial charm and themes range from traditional African Safari, Cape Colonial to Victorian splendour.

The Family Unit (sleeps 5) consist of two separate inter leading rooms and a bathroom, the one with a double bed and the other with three single beds. This unit also has a lounge area with a fireplace.

The African and Colonial bedrooms have a balcony overlooking the swimming pool area. The African room (sleeps 3) is furnished with twin beds (3/4 beds) and an extra single bed. The Colonial room (sleeps 3) has a Queen size bed and an extra single bed.

The Mediterranean Room (sleeps 2 ) consist of a double bed and separate living area.

The Garden Room (sleeps 2) has a King size sleigh bed, Victorian bath and a private garden.

The Victorian Room (sleeps 2) has a Queen size Victorian bed overlooking the tranquil front garden.

All the bedrooms have the necessary amenities, comfortable mattresses, percale linen, tea and coffee facilities. The bedrooms are further equipped with air-conditioning, fridges and electric blankets. Safe, off the road parking bays are conveniently situated at your doorstep. Children and pets are most welcome.

Activities & Attractions


Swellendam, the third oldest magisterial district in South Africa, nestling in the foothills of the majestic Langeberg mountain, is a charming town with a fascinating history. Strategically situated on the N2, approximately 240km from both Cape Town and George has much to offer visitors interested in heritage and culture, architecture, wildlife and outdoor adventure. It is also an ideal base from which to explore the neighboring Southern Cape, Breede River Valley and the Klein Karoo.

Visitors to Cypress Cottage are within walking distance from the many old buildings that have been declared National Monuments, one of the most interesting being the Dutch Reformed 'Moederkerk' with its eclectic architectural features and the famous Drostdy Museum Complex (1747) consisting of several historical buildings, a restaurant and gift shop. Visitors are welcome at the studios of well-known potters, the Sulina Faerie Sanctuary and the Wildebraam Youngberry Liqueur Farm where the famous berry liqueur is produced.

Wildlife and outdoor adventurers are invited to visit the nearby National Park and Nature Reserves. Bontebok National Park (7 km from Swellendam) provides sanctuary for herds of bontebok antelope, as well as other small buck species and Mountain Zebra. A total of 126 different bird species have also been identified here. Marloth Nature Reserve is a botanist's dream with an abundance of wild flowers and fynbos. Hiking trails have been established. De Hoop / Potberg Nature Reserve has seven distinct ecosystems and is an excellent spot from which to view the Southern Right whales with their calves from June to November.

For the sports lover, there is the usual sporting facilities like tennis courts, a squash court and bowling greens. In addition Swellendam offers horse trails and mountain biking in the forests, canoeing and river rafting on the Breede River, various water activities on the Buffeljags Dam as well as sunset cruises on either the dam or the river, including an excellent 9-hole golf course.
