Calitzdorp Country House Calitzdorp

Overlooking the little town of Calitzdorp on Route 62, Calitzdorp Country House offers spectacular views across a fertile valley of vineyards and orchards to the majestic Swartberg Mountains beyond.

Extravagantly furnished with antiques, Persian rugs, special fabrics and original art, the House is serendipitously situated at the heart of the Klein Karoo’s world-class tourist attractions. Capturing the style of a gentleman’s country residence, Calitzdorp Country House exudes a quiet, elegant ambience. Add a formal dining room, spacious lounge, five individually decorated luxurious bedrooms, voluptuous bathrooms with shower and baths spacious enough for a tryst, pool with shady gazebo, an air of relaxed comfort, and five star Calitzdorp Country House has to be the destination for visitors to the region. The House’s well-stocked wine cellar secretes both local and classical South African wines to complement your silver and crystal dining experience.

Accommodation

Five luxurious air-conditioned bedrooms, each with its own private patio, garden and bubbling water fountain, are furnished throughout with Victorian, Cape and French antiques and graced with a fabulous collection of original South- and West African paintings, carvings and bronzes. Original Oregon wood floors provide the perfect mirrored showcase for a colorful variety of Persian rugs, adding to the overall elegance.

Beds are king size extra length, clad in fine linen, down pillows and duvets to ensure a peaceful night’s rest. The Italian-tiled en suite bathrooms include showers, twin washbasins on magnificently patterned granite slabs and best of all, outsize baths that invite intimate candle-lit assignations. Luxuries include Charlotte Rhys fine toiletries.

Relaxing & Dining

The decorator’s theme extends to the elegant and spacious dining and sitting rooms, where languid ceiling fans, hand crafted in the colonial style, produce gentle swirls of cooling air. In the hotter months, air conditioning throughout the House effortlessly copes with your need for comfort. The sitting room features a 19th century Cape yellowwood jonkmanskas (bachelor’s clothes cupboard) and a pair of majestic oak boardroom chairs from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange circa 1904 set amongst a treasured collection of china, paintings and bronzes.

Tables in the classical dining room are topped with lustrous yellowwood imbued with all the character that comes from their previous existence as ceilings in the original farm homestead. A fine example of Cape koskas (pantry cupboard) in beefwood and fruitwood presides benevolently over warm wooden floors covered with rich Persian carpets. An 1836 walnut piano leads to the dining room entrance, flanked by an intriguing work of art in fiberglass and oil opposite a lacquered Chinese screen.

Facilities

Dining and sitting rooms flow seamlessly out to a flagstone-paved courtyard, ideal for fresh morning breakfasts or al fresco dining on hot still summer evenings, or just for lazing with a drink. The courtyard’s restful water fountain overlooks a long view westwards across blue salt-water swimming pool and cool gazebo, over green vineyards and lush orchards, to the stark and dramatic Swartberg mountains beyond.

The cool shade of a verandah which surrounds three sides of the house entices guests to relax on 19th century Cape and Transvaal rusbanke with a book or cocktail, to absorb the quiet pleasure of the splendid scenery, or take in the many examples of bird life on the adjacent dam and its surrounding trees. Indeed, Calitzdorp, with its many species of birds, provides an ornithologist’s paradise - recently, a Blue Crane has joined the Hamerkops and Reed Cormorant visiting our dam.

After another spectacular sunset, seemingly inevitable in the Klein Karoo, those guests who take advantage of our fine dining offer may be persuaded to visit our well-stocked cellar to choose the appropriate local or classical South African wine to accompany their meal. Then coffee and port on the verandah, and the evening concludes with a crescendo of crashing light from the incomparable southern night skies in all their celestial splendor.
