There are lots to explore in the neighbouring towns, all less than a 30 minutes drive from Jacobsbaai. Some of the “must sees” while you are here, are the Rocherpan Nature Reserve near Velddrift, Cape Columbine Nature Reserve and the Columbine Lighthouse, the West Coast National Park and the Fossil Park - all offer an insight in the natural history of this area.
Be sure not to miss the most scenic time of the year to visit Jacobsbaai for an unforgettable personal experience of our majestic flowers from August to October. A botanist’s dream, with free veld displays every year! There are 1200 indigenous plants in the area. Wildlife such as small wild cat, Duiker, grysbok and steenbok, are common sightings in Jacobsbaai. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 200 species of birds, including the spotted eagle and owl. Between March and November, whales and dolphins are regular visitors to the bays of Jacobsbaai.
ACTIVITIES
Jacobsbaai is a fisherman’s haven with the azure Atlantic Ocean providing an abundance of seafood like crayfish, hottentot, galjoen, white steenbras and black mussels. You will find fresh crayfish in season, normally from November to January. Visit the fishing boats on the beach as they arrive back with their morning’s catch.
The area offers spectacular hiking along the scenic coastline. Nature walks, bird watching and the multiflower extravaganza during spring are all part of the West Coast experience. When the wanderlust sets in, the 17km hiking trail between Swartriet and Tietiesbaai, is a good option to satisfy your curiosity of the equally gorgeous surrounding bays. Golf, sailing, deep-sea fishing, underwater diving, horse riding, organised boat trips and romantic sunset cruises can be arranged. Other activities in the area include windsurfing, sailing and canoeing.
