African Relish \ Accommodation in Prince Albert

African Relish is a Recreational Cooking School, set in the Karoo town of Prince Albert, South Africa. Our culinary hall is the only purpose built facility of its kind. Here our guests will enjoy luxury accommodation and discover the culinary pulse of South Africa, they can enjoy African Relish either as a stand-alone destination or part of an extended gourmet tour.

Our accommodation consists of beautifully renovated cottages in this charming Karoo town. With traditional irrigation canals running along the streets, this combination of well-appointed and luxurious living space coupled with the sound of trickling water is a haven in which to unwind.

Cooking

African Relish cooking courses emphasizes gourmet getaways celebrating our Karoo food heroes. The website outlines the details of each scheduled and themed courses. We also offer mid week anytime courses which fit in with your calendar, here the focus is on fresh, local and seasonal produce.

The African Relish restaurant is open by special arrangement for private functions and dinners. Cooking course participants will sometimes assist in the preparation of the dishes served to restaurant guests as part of the cooking experience. Guests are welcome to interact one on one with our kitchen team and discuss the menu in between courses and to observe a tranquil and efficient kitchen at work.

Our menu changes each week, designed around seasonal, local produce and takes Karoo cuisine on a contemporary journey. Open by arrangement for special functions and dinners. The restaurant is fully licensed and accepts major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard).

Prince Albert

Prince Albert is a culinary enigma, situated on the edge of the vast and dry Great Karoo, it enjoys an abundance of clean mountain water and fertile soil. The area has been farmed since the 1700s and continues in that tradition of growing an assortment of deciduous and citrus fruit. Apricots, peaches, quinces and figs are ideally suited for the climate and an abundance of vegetable varieties.

Obviously the legendary Karoo lamb is much sought after with its distinctive flavour derived from the herbal Karoo vegetation grazing. Venison is very popular and particularly Kudu, Springbok and Gemsbok (Oryx) are abundant. Internationally acclaimed cheese is produced in the town at Gay’s Guernsey Dairy and wines are produced at Bergwater Vineyards in the verdant Prince Albert Valley. Prince Albert has become an extremely popular tourist venue, enjoyed for its historical charm and unspoilt beauty.

The town is now attracting a growing number of culinary travellers from far and wide who come to enjoy traditional, seasonal and most importantly local cuisine. The culinary culture of South Africa, and the Karoo in particular is rich and intriguing.
